For an amp, does the remote wire HAVE to be hooked to a 12v source? Please help?

Hi, i hooked up my remote wire to a different wire behind the HU today and now i cannot turn my subs up loud or my amp goes into protection mode. Does the remote wire have to be hooked up to a wire with 12volts? are all of the wires behind the HU 12v? please help, thanks
