Can a creditor garnish my SS check that is direct dep into my bank account? I have a judgement for credit card?

and I've been paying $75 a month for 2 yrs and the balance is going nowhere. If I stop they will move fwd with the garnishment. I'm 80 yrs old and have all govt istance.Ive always paid my bills, but this one credit card got away from me so here I am in this mess. Someone told me to close bank acct and have check sent in mail so they cant get it, but I;ve had this acct for 60 yrs! Any suggestions would be so appreciated.
