Who finds this Ironic? That most Politicians supported Saddam Hussein and then would betray him 20 years later?

Nothing "ironic" about it. The entire political landscape has changed since then during the Cold War. It was the Soviet bloc vs. the Western Democratic powers. Hussein was a bulwark against the Soviets. That's all that mattered. Just like a few years earlier, America and Britain made an alliance with the USSR during WWII. We didn't like it, but Nazi Germany, Italy and Japan were the bigger threat.
