Why does Palmer's cocoa er spray kill flies?

We have a pretty bad problem with flies in our house, they seem to come from everywhere. One my wife got annoyed to the point the she sprayed them with the closed thing to her it happened to be some cocoa er spray. To her surprise they dropped on contact with the stuff and later found dozens more along with them. Can anyone explain why this seemingly harmless product is so deadly to house flies?
